MANDAM, Fla. (AP) —The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday said men taking erectile dysfunction drugs such as Viagra and Cialis will get the same benefits from them.
The agency said those drugs — marketed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction — work by relaxing muscles and improving blood flow to the penis. They also can help men who have problems with sexual arousal or desire.
While the drugs are not approved by the FDA, some experts have expressed concerns that the side effects of the drugs might lead to serious illnesses.
“We know of a very serious side effect associated with the use of these drugs,” said Dr. Bruce Grier, a urology specialist at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
A similar side effect could occur with some of the drugs. Men taking the drugs have a higher risk of developing certain serious conditions, including an enlarged prostate, a heart attack, and kidney failure.
Dr. James Klee, director of urology at Mayo Clinic in Dallas, said patients should not take any drug that contains nitrates or nitric oxide donors to treat their heart problems.
“We have never seen a patient that would be in danger of a life-threatening reaction from nitrates or nitric oxide donors,” he said.
Thomas D. Fugh, a urologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, said patients should not take nitrates or nitric oxide donors for a long time.
“If you take any nitrates or nitric oxide donors, it may cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure,” he said.
He said that while Viagra and Cialis are FDA-approved, some of the drugs carry a risk of side effects in some people.
Andrew M. Hays, a urologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, said he believes patients should not take nitrates or nitric oxide donors for a long time.
“I’m not saying that these drugs are safe, but I think there’s a serious medical problem,” he said.
Viagra and Cialis can cause serious side effects, including a heart attack and stroke, and people taking these drugs should talk with their doctors about their risks and the benefits of treatment.
“We know a lot of people are taking these drugs because they’re effective and safe,” said Dr. Hays, adding that patients who have suffered a heart attack or stroke or who take other drugs may be at risk for serious side effects. “So it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor about what other drugs you’re taking.”
In addition to the drugs, doctors also must monitor for any dangerous drug interactions and should prescribe the drugs with caution.
“The only way to avoid some dangerous side effects is to prescribe these medications and don’t prescribe them,” said Dr. Michael E. Nissen, a urologist at the Cleveland Clinic.
The FDA said that the safety of Viagra and Cialis were evaluated by the FDA in 2008. That same year, the agency approved sildenafil citrate as the first drug approved for erectile dysfunction.
